About Me
I worked for over 20 years as a qualified Royal Marines mechanic and military vehicle air conditioning specialist and have qualifications in handling refrigerant (City & Guilds Institute 5101), also I attended numerous specialist courses at Technical Topics including C&G level 4 in electric & hybrid vehicles.
Why Service Your Air-Conditioning?
Your air-con system loses up to 15% of its refrigerant every year.
Diagnosis
Not cold enough? Windows not demisting on cold mornings? Strange noises from a/c?
A poorly performing car air conditioning system can cause a build-up of fungus, bacteria and other microbes growing inside the evaporator core, causing a smell and sometimes drowsiness.
The anti-bacterial treatment will clear the evaporator, cool the cabin with greater efficiency as well as making it smell better.
By having less refrigerant, the compressor has to work harder causing extra stress and strain on the whole system.
Recommendation
I would recommend you service your vehicle's air-con after 3-4 years from new to prevent major damage to your a/c system. I had previously recommended servicing after 6 years from new, but I've seen a lot of cars over 4 years old whose a/c is failing to operate efficiently due to seals deteriorating. This is caused, in the main, through vibrations on the system allowing gas to pass through the seals.
Leak Problem?
Leaks don’t get any smaller! Modern cars use a smaller quantity of gas than older cars. Condensers on modern cars just don't seem made to last. The condenser is located in front of the radiator and takes a direct hit from debris and winter road salt causing deterioration of the coils/ fins.
All it takes is a small stone to shoot up onto the condenser to expensively damage it. Keep your distance on all these newly surfaced roads in Mid Devon! Therefore, even a small loss of gas makes a big difference to the efficiency of your a/c system.
Regular A/C Servicing
Regular servicing will keep a higher re-sale potential for your vehicle and prevent expensive a/c repair bills.
Have your car air-con system serviced every 2 years when the vehicle is over 3-4 years old. It will say this in your car manufacturers' service guide, yet when your car is serviced, the a/c system is rarely checked. It's often an extra, chargeable item, but vital to have done.
Remember, your air-con is for ALL seasons... not just for summer!
Air-con gas has increased in price 600% since 2017. Pressure testing or leak testing is paramount for reducing a costly failure and reducing the environmental impact.
